The special ad category is for ads that include social issues, elections or politics, credit opportunities, employment opportunities, housing opportunities or related services.

If your ad is considered a special ad you will have some limitations when it comes to creating a target audience based on age, gender, or zip code.

This is because these types of ads have had a history of discrimination with advertisers who were excluding certain individuals from seeing them.

Facebook has stated that no matter someone’s age, gender, or location, they have the right to access job opportunities, credit, and housing.

Let’s dive a little bit deeper into each of these categories.

Credit Opportunity

Ads that promote or link people to credit opportunities must be put in a special ad category.

This includes but is not limited to:

  • Credit card offers.

  • Auto loans.

  • Personal or business loan services.

  • Mortgage loans and long-term financing.

  • Brand ads for credit cards regardless of a special offer.

Please note that for ads that fall under credit opportunities, certain targeting options aren’t available.

The Credit, Employment, and Housing opportunities or Related services requirements apply to advertisers based in or targeting the US and targeting Canada.

Employment Opportunity

If your ads promote or directly link to an employment opportunity they are considered special ads.

This includes but is not limited to:

  • Part- or full-time jobs.

  • Internships.

  • Professional certification programs.

  • Promotions for job boards or fairs.

  • Aggregation services or ads detailing perks a company may provide, regardless of a specific job offer.

Please note that for ads that fall under employment opportunities, certain targeting options aren’t available.

The Credit, Employment, and Housing opportunities or Related services requirements apply to advertisers based in or targeting the US and targeting Canada.

Ads that promote or directly link to a housing opportunity or related service fall under this special ad category.

This includes but is not limited to:

  • Listings for the sale or rental of a home or apartment.

  • Homeowner’s insurance.

  • Mortgage insurance.

  • Mortgage loans.

  • Housing repairs.

  • Home equity or appraisal services.

This does NOT include ads designed to educate consumers or housing providers about their rights and responsibilities under fair housing laws.

Please note that for ads that fall under housing opportunities or related services, certain targeting options aren’t available.

The Credit, Employment, and Housing opportunities or Related services requirements apply to advertisers based in or targeting the US and targeting Canada.

Social Issues, Elections or Politics

Ads that may influence the outcome of an election or result in or relate to an existing or proposed legislation must go under this special ad category.

This includes but is not limited to ads that are made by, or behalf of:

  • A candidate for public office.

  • A political figure.

  • A political party.

  • Anyone who advocates for the outcome of an election to public office.

Moreover, your ad may also fall under this category if your ads are about:

  • Elections.

  • Referendum.

  • Ballot initiatives (including “go out and vote” election campaigns).

How to Run Ads About Social Issues, Elections or Politics

Running ads about social issues, elections or politics, means you might need to get authorized in the country you want to run ads in.

To do this, you must confirm your identity and provide information about your organization to place “Paid for by” disclaimers on ads and then have your ads entered into the public Ad Library for seven years.

Remember that if you don’t select a special ad category and Facebook determines that your ads include any of the above criteria, your ads will be rejected.

Additionally, when you run a “Paid for by” disclaimer that targets people in a selected country, Facebook will determine whether the ads are coming from a real user in the same country they’re running ads in.

Facebook does this by checking for information about people, ad accounts and pages.

However, if it discovers any discrepancies, such as someone who is outside of the targeted country editing or creating these types of ads, it will be rejected.
